Summer Show

Last Friday saw the inaugural Summer show at Highfurlong School. The show was organised by the wonderful Miss Cherry, our Key Stage 4 teacher and performing arts leader. Every class in school had a particular theme and every child or young person took part in the show.
Class 9P had a jungle theme. All the children and staff were dressed as jungle animals and each child carried their favourite animal. Several jungle related songs were played and the staff whirled the children around in their chairs much to their great delight. Every child had a big smile on their face and there was much giggling.
Class 6S had an underwater theme. Amy was dressed as a Mermaid and looked beautiful. Two of the boys were sharks and their teacher was Nemo. They performed 3 songs from ‘Finding Nemo’ and had a lovely time doing so.
Next up were class 4C. They performed a medley of different songs. One particularly moving song was from ‘Frozen’. They performed this with sign language which looked spectacular from the audience’s view point. During this part of the show George performed a solo song. This was very moving and a few parents were visibly moved.
Class 5A performed songs from Matilda. I’m reliably informed by one of the 10 year old students that Matilda is a book, a play and a film all about a school with a wicked head teacher. The students were all dressed as naughty school children who were misbehaving. They had a wonderful time performing their part and their staff were excellent.
Key Stage 5 performed a compilation of scenes from musicals through the years. This included Footloose, Timewarp, Dirty Dancing, Flash Dance and Ghostbusters.
Joel did some wonderfully creative street dancing to a clapping audience. Next, Joel and Caitlin took part in a boxing scene from Rocky. The final song was from Gerard, Damon and Joel who excelled themselves singing a song by Aerosmith.
Everyone had a fabulous time at the show. Approximately 60 parents attended which is wonderful for a small school. Some parents shed tears of joy when they saw their children performing for the first time. As a member of the audience I found the whole experience a joy to watch and very moving.
Special thanks should go to Blackpool Sixth Form for loaning us their theatre. We are very grateful. Thanks also go to the parents and Carers for attending and supporting their children and young people. I must also thank the children and staff for taking part so enthusiastically. It was obvious how much they enjoyed themselves.
The biggest thanks must go to Miss Cherry. Well done Miss Cherry, you did us proud.
